Oahu, Hawaii is a tropical paradise filled with pristine beaches, vibrant culture, amazing landscapes, and rich culture. I’ve not visited yet (bucket list) but as a history professor of US history, I teach about its history. To help others discover Oahu’s culture, I’ve compiled some of the island’s best attractions, so you can create an unforgettable vacation. Explore historical sites, commune with nature, or immerse yourself in local culture, this blog showcases must-see attractions, hidden gems, and fantastic tours to make the most of your tip.

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Oahu is not only the most populous island in Hawaii but also the economic and cultural hub of the state. It offers a unique blend of city vibrancy and peaceful nature. From bustling streets to tranquil shores, Oahu has something for everyone. Some of the noted cities on the island are: Honolulu, Kahala, Pearl City, and Waikiki.

Oahu has been inhabited for thousands of years, with the first Polynesian settlers arriving around 1,500 years ago. The island played a crucial role in the unification of the Hawaiian Islands in the late 18th century under the reign of King Kamehameha I. And, of course, Americans will remember the island as the setting for the bombing of Pearl Harbor—a day that has lived in infamy. Today, Oahu is a paradise where travelers can explore the cultural heritage of the Hawaiian people.

Top Attractions in Oahu

Oahu is home to a plethora of captivating attractions that cater to all interests. Whether you seek relaxation on sun-kissed beaches or want to delve into the island’s history and cultural heritage, Oahu has it all.

Waikiki Beach—No visit to Oahu is complete without experiencing the world-famous Waikiki Beach. With golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and stunning views of Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach offers an idyllic setting for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Take a surf lesson, paddleboard along the shore, or simply relax under the shade of a palm tree and soak up the tropical ambiance. If you’re looking for a place to stay, Waikiki is the most popular tourist destination on the island, known for its stunning beach, vibrant nightlife, and shopping.

Pearl Harbor—Learn about the historic events of December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, the site of the infamous attack by Japan that propelled the United States into World War II. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and the Pacific Aviation Museum to gain a deeper understanding of this pivotal moment in history and honor the bravery of those who lost their lives.

Luau—No visit to Oahu would be complete without experiencing a traditional Hawaiian luau. Traditional feasts include mouthwatering dishes such as kalua pig, poi, and fish while enjoying traditional music, hula dancing, and fire knife performances

Water Sports—Oahu’s crystal-clear waters provide the perfect playground for water sports enthusiasts. For surf enthusiasts, a trip to Oahu’s North Shore is a pilgrimage to the birthplace of big-wave surfing. Snorkeling is another popular activity, allowing you to explore the vibrant underwater world teeming with tropical fish and coral reefs. Marine Life—From December to May, Oahu becomes a playground for humpback whales as they migrate from Alaska to Hawaii’s warm waters to breed and give birth. Take a whale-watching tour and witness these magnificent creatures up close as they breach and play in the ocean. We’ve watched whales in the Atlantic Ocean and it was an awe-inspiring experience! You can also swim with dolphins, dive into shark-infested waters, watch turtles, and more.

Scenic Drives/Ultimate Tours—Oahu offers several scenic drives that showcase the island’s natural wonders. The Hana Highway, also known as the Windward Coast Drive, takes you on a picturesque journey along the island’s eastern shoreline, passing by stunning beaches, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys. The North Shore Scenic Drive offers equally breathtaking views of the coastline, with the added bonus of passing through charming beach towns and world-class surf breaks. You can also pretend to be Magnum PI and ride a helicopter with the doors off or have a full-day excursion.

Hiking Trails—From lush rainforests to dramatic mountain ranges, the island boasts an extensive network of trails catering to all levels of fitness and expertise. For those seeking adventure and panoramic views, a hike up Diamond Head is a must-do activity. This iconic volcanic crater offers a moderately challenging trail that rewards hikers with breathtaking vistas of the island’s coastline and Honolulu’s skyline.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Respect for the local culture and customs is essential when visiting Oahu. Here are a few tips to ensure you have a respectful and enjoyable experience:

  • Mahalo: Familiarize yourself with basic Hawaiian words and phrases, such as “aloha” (hello/goodbye) and “mahalo” (thank you). Using these expressions shows respect for the local culture.
  • Remove Shoes: When entering someone’s home or certain establishments, it is customary to remove your shoes. Look for signs or follow the lead of the locals.
  • Respect Sacred Sites: Oahu is home to numerous sacred sites and cultural landmarks. Show respect by observing posted signs and refraining from touching or removing any artifacts.
  • Ocean Safety: Oahu’s waters can be powerful and unpredictable. Take caution when swimming or participating in water activities, and always follow the advice of lifeguards. Also, respect the marine life in the water by wearing reef-safe sunscreen and taking care of trash.
