Viator Tours & Tickets: How to Find and Book Experiences Around the World

As a historian and frequent traveler, I want to immerse myself in the history, art, culture, archaeology, and landscape of every place I visit. But with limited time and increasingly expensive vacations, choosing the right attractions and experiences matters. That’s where Viator comes in. I can search destinations around the world to discover what’s possible—from museum and attraction tickets to guided tours, food experiences, day trips, and more—all in one place.

For me, Viator isn’t just a place to book a tour; it’s a place to discover what is possible. Exploring destinations and experiences can be part of the journey itself, helping me imagine a trip and decide what I want to see, do, and experience before I ever pack my suitcase. In this guide, I’ll show you how I use Viator to find and compare tours, tickets, and experiences around the world, along with what to look for before you book.

Looking for a specific tour or ticket? Search Viator by destination, attraction, or activity. Compare the itinerary, recent reviews, group size, inclusions, meeting point, cancellation policy, and price before you book.

What Is Viator?

Viator is an online marketplace where travelers can search for and book tours, attraction tickets, activities, day trips, food experiences, cruises, and other travel experiences. They currently lists more than 400,000 travel experiences worldwide, making it possible to search by destination, attraction, activity, or type of experience.

Viator is a marketplace rather than the company operating every tour. The individual experience is provided by a local tour operator or attraction, while Viator provides the platform where you can research and book the experience. That distinction is important.

When you’re considering a Viator experience, look at the operator, the itinerary, the reviews, the cancellation policy, and exactly what is included before you book.

What Can You Book on Viator?

One of the reasons I use Viator is the sheer variety of experiences available.

You can find:

  • Attraction tickets for museums, monuments, observation decks, archaeological sites, and other major sights
  • Guided tours led by local guides
  • Walking tours focused on history, architecture, food, art, or neighborhoods
  • Skip-the-line and timed-entry experiences where available
  • Food tours and cooking classes
  • Day trips from major cities
  • Boat tours and cruises
  • Adventure activities
  • Cultural experiences
  • Private and small-group tours
  • Shore excursions
  • Multi-attraction experiences and sightseeing passes

For example, a traveler visiting Rome might use Viator simply to purchase Colosseum admission, while another traveler might choose a guided Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill experience. Neither is necessarily the better choice. The right booking depends on what you want from the experience–to focus on just the Colosseum or the whole complex.

Should You Book a Ticket or a Guided Tour?

This is one of the most important decisions to make before booking.

Choose an Viator attraction ticket when:

  • You primarily want admission to the site.
  • You prefer exploring independently.
  • You want to spend as much—or as little—time as you like inside.
  • You have a tight itinerary and don’t want to commit to a tour.

Choose a Viator guided tour when:

  • You want historical or cultural context.
  • You don’t want to navigate the attraction on your own.
  • You have limited time.
  • You want to understand what you’re seeing rather than simply look at it.
  • You want someone else to handle some of the logistics.
  • You’re visiting a complicated site where a knowledgeable guide can make a significant difference.

As a historian, I tend to choose guided experiences when the story behind a place is an important part of why I’m visiting. But sometimes a ticket is exactly what you need.

How to Find the Right Viator Tour or Ticket

Viator has an enormous number of listings, which is both its greatest strength and one of its challenges. Here is how I narrow down the choices.

1. Start with the attraction or destination

Instead of searching for something vague like “best tour,” start with what you actually want to see. This immediately makes the search more manageable.

For example:

2. Decide what kind of experience you want

Do you want: admission only? a guided tour? a private tour? a small-group tour? a food experience? a day trip? a combination of several attractions?

Knowing this before you start comparing listings can save you a lot of time.

3. Read the recent reviews

Don’t look only at the overall star rating. Read several recent reviews and look for patterns. Are travelers consistently mentioning knowledgeable guides? Was the meeting point easy to find? Did the experience actually match the description? Were there complaints about transportation, timing, or communication?

Reviews can tell you things that the marketing description doesn’t. I also look for the “Badge of Excellence.”

4. Check exactly what is included

This is especially important with attraction tickets. “Skip the line,” “priority access,” “entrance ticket,” and “guided tour” are not necessarily interchangeable. I’ve found that you can’t always assume that something is included simply because it is in the tour title.

Read the description carefully to determine:

  • What ticket is included?
  • Is a guide included?
  • Is transportation included?
  • Are reservations required?
  • Is hotel pickup included?
  • Are meals included?
  • Are there additional fees?
  • What happens if you arrive late?

5. Look at the cancellation policy

Viator says many experiences offer free cancellation, often when canceled at least 24 hours in advance, but policies vary by experience. Always check the specific cancellation policy before booking.

6. Check the meeting point

This is one of my biggest practical travel tips. A tour can look fantastic until you discover that the meeting point is a 25-minute walk from the attraction—or on the other side of a major city. Look at the meeting point on a map and consider how it fits into the rest of your day.

7. Compare similar experiences

Open two or three similar listings and compare:

  • price
  • duration
  • group size
  • itinerary
  • inclusions
  • meeting point
  • cancellation policy
  • reviews
  • operator

Sometimes the differences are significant.

Is Viator Legitimate and Safe to Use?

Viator is an established online marketplace for tours and activities, and its website currently lists more than 400,000 experiences and millions of traveler reviews. Viatoralso advertises 24/7 customer support. However, remember that the experience itself is provided by the individual operator. That means you should evaluate the tour listing, not simply assume that every experience on a large marketplace will be identical. I recommend checking the operator information, recent reviews, itinerary, meeting instructions, and cancellation terms before booking.

Is Viator Cheaper Than Booking Direct?

Not necessarily. Sometimes an attraction or tour operator charges the same price through Viator as it does directly. Other times, the direct website may have a different price, ticket type, package, or availability.

Compare the Viator listing with the attraction or tour operator’s official website before booking. But price isn’t the only consideration. You may decide that having your bookings together in one place, being able to compare reviews, or having a particular cancellation policy is worth more to you than saving a few dollars.

When I Prefer Viator for Booking Travel Experiences

There are several situations in which I find a marketplace like Viator particularly useful.

  • When I’m researching an unfamiliar destination. I can search a city and quickly see what kinds of experiences are available. This is especially helpful during the early stages of trip planning, when I don’t yet know exactly what I want to book.
  • When I’m looking for attraction tickets. Major attractions can have complicated ticketing systems. Searching Viator gives me another place to compare available ticket options and guided experiences.
  • When I want to compare different tours. Rather than opening numerous individual tour company websites, I can compare experiences, reviews, durations, and prices in one place.
  • When I want flexibility. Many Viator experiences offer flexible cancellation policies, although the exact terms vary by listing. Viator also offers Reserve Now & Pay Later on eligible experiences.

That can be useful when you’re planning a trip months in advance, which I generally do.

What Kind of Experiences Can You Book on Viator?

One of the things I like about Viator is the variety of experiences available. You aren’t limited to traditional sightseeing tours. Depending on the destination, you can find everything from simple attraction tickets to immersive experiences that introduce you to the history, food, culture, and people of a place.

Some of the most common types of experiences include:

  • Attraction Tickets: Visit museums, archaeological sites, historic landmarks, observation decks, and other popular attractions with an admission ticket or timed-entry reservation.
  • Guided Tours: Explore museums, historic sites, neighborhoods, and cities with a knowledgeable local guide. These can be particularly valuable when understanding the history or significance of a place adds to the experience.
  • Food & Cultural Experiences: Take a food tour, cooking class, wine tasting, or other experience that introduces you to local traditions and cuisine.
  • Day Trips: Visit destinations outside the city you’re staying in without having to arrange all of the transportation and logistics yourself.
  • Walking Tours: Get to know a city or neighborhood on foot, often with a focus on history, architecture, food, or local culture.
  • Private and Small-Group Experiences: If you prefer a more personal experience, Viator offers private tours as well as tours with smaller groups. Check the individual listing for the specific group size.
  • Shore Excursions: Cruise passengers can find organized excursions designed around the time available in port. Pay particular attention to the return-to-ship time and transportation arrangements when comparing these experiences.
  • Outdoor and Adventure Activities: Depending on the destination, you can also find boat trips, hiking excursions, wildlife experiences, cycling tours, and other outdoor activities.

The possibilities vary by destination, which is part of the fun of searching Viator. It’s fun to just go to Viator and type in the city you want and a category. For example, Florence day trips brings up the following fun experiences: https://www.viator.com/Florence-tours/Day-Trips-and-Excursions/d519-g5?pid=P00161535&mcid=42383&medium=link&medium_version=selector

Find Viator Tours and Tickets by Destination

This is where I recommend starting if you already know where you’re going. For this section, I’m focusing on Italy but my travel guides page on Roaming Historian has many other locations including Barcelona, Paris, Athens, New York City, Puerto Rico, and much, much more.

Italy

  • Rome Find tickets and tours for the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican Museums, and other major Roman attractions.
  • Florence Explore options for the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia Gallery, Florence Duomo, historic walking tours, and other Florentine experiences.
  • Venice Find gondola experiences, walking tours, food tours, and other ways to explore Venice.
  • Milan Look for experiences focused on the Duomo, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, Milan’s history, and day trips from the city.
  • Amalfi Coast Compare boat tours, day trips, food experiences, and excursions along the coast.
  • Naples Find experiences focused on Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples’ historic center, food, and surrounding attractions.
  • Tuscany Explore wine, food, historic towns, countryside excursions, and other Tuscan experiences.
  • Sicily Find food tours, historic experiences, archaeological sites, and excursions throughout Sicily.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Viator Tour?

There isn’t one answer that works for every experience. For extremely popular attractions, I recommend booking as soon as you know your travel dates, particularly if you’re traveling during peak season.

For less popular experiences, you may have much more flexibility. As a general rule, the more important an experience is to your trip, the earlier I recommend booking it. If seeing the Uffizi is one of the main reasons you’re going to Florence, don’t wait until the night before to figure out your tickets.
