The United States has much history, culture, and scenery to explore. Unfortunately, many who visit our great nation only see a small percentage of what our country has to offer, but those who have a longer time to travel hit the road and go on the great American road trip. The editors of Reader’s Digest have recently put out a new book designed to inspire our wanderlust and capture America’s beauty…or at the very least offer us breathtaking armchair travel.
With loads of gorgeous photos, Great American Road Trips: Scenic Drives, offers readers long and short road trips broken out by region: West, Southwest, Midwest, Southwest, and Northeast. For each trip, the authors provide helpful insider tips, must-see stops, nearby attractions, and photos that give you a glimpse of the scenery you will see along the way.
One of the scenic drives that caught my attention is one I’ve driven myself: Leelanau Peninsula. Since I was a teenager, my family would go up to Traverse City and camp there. I’ve stayed at Sleeping Bear Dunes (also on this route), in Leelanau, and many other areas. As an adult, I love driving my convertible with the top down along M-22 through the vineyards (taking bottles of wine for drinking later when I’m not driving) and the cities that punctuate the coastal road. You can visit historic lighthouses, shop at great antique shops, visit neat historic sites, and see one of the Great Lakes. The area has become quite a foodie scene, too, with Traverse City (at the end of the drive) boasting some great restaurants. I can definitely see why the editors put this route in their collection.
Perusing through the book, I found the short stories enough to pique my interest, but not too lengthy or prescribed. Instead of mapping out the journey point by point, the authors give readers ideas to create the road trip of their dreams. Instead of worrying about missing a turn, or not seeing a specific attraction, the traveler is given beautiful photos, inspiration, and ideas of what might be, but not what has to be. This is refreshing.
If you are looking for travel inspiration for the Great American Road Trip, or a collection of photographs of American scenery, I would recommend this book as I think you will enjoy it.
Disclosure: I was given this book free of charge, but this review is my opinion.
